Taming Our Wild Elephant Mind

Saturday, May 19
2:00 to 3:30 pm

Do you ever feel that your mind is like a wild elephant--powerful, but out of control? Do you find that you have all sorts of unhelpful thoughts which weave painful fantasies that get you nowhere? This is very normal.

“With all my effort I should regularly check
That the unsubdued elephant of my mind
Has not broken free,
But remains bound to the great pillar of thinking about Dharma.”
– SHANTIDEVA, Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life

In his Guide, the great Indian Buddhist master Shantideva compares the uncontrolled mind to a wild elephant. Like a wild elephant, when our mind is out of control, it is capable of inflicting great harm upon ourselves and/or upon others. However, by using the practices of mindfulness and alertness, we can learn to tame our wild elephant mind and thus experience the blissful peace of a well-controlled mind.
