Offering to the Spiritual Guide

On the 10th and 25th of the month, or to celebrate other special occasions

Our favorite! Bring a friend! This is a special chanted practice for increasing our compassion, our wisdom, and our spiritual power (power to overcome our own negative states of mind). Through making these prayers we develop a huge amount of good karma, which we dedicate for the peace and happiness of all beings. Offering to the Spiritual Guide includes all the stages of Buddha's teachings of Sutra and Tantra, and is very beautiful.

In Offering to the Spritual Guide, we request the Wisdom Guru Buddha Je Tsongkhapa for his blessings, help, and inspiration. It also includes all the essential practices of the stages of the path to enlightenment and training the mind, as well as both the generation stage and completion stage of Highest Yoga Tantra. For more information: kadampa.org.

This practice includes a tea offering, and a "tsog" offering so you may bring a small vegetarian food offering. ( < 2 hours) Everyone welcome!

Heart Jewel

Heart Jewel prayers uplift and inspire our mind. It can recited or chanted for relaxation, for a more clear mind, or as part of meditations on any and all the stages of the path to enlightenment. In Heart Jewel we receive the blessings of all Buddhas' compassion, wisdom, and spiritual power (power to overcome our own delusions and obstacles).

Duration: about an hour, which includes 20 minutes of silent meditation.

Wishfulfilling Jewel

Revealed by the Wisdom Buddha, Manjushri, these chanted prayers offer us a profound way to receive blessings, acumulate good fortune, and purify negative karma. Once a week, a Tsog offering is made in conjunction with the meditation session. Everyone is welcome to bring a vegetarian food offering and enjoy this inspiring practice. The calendar will indicate either 'with Tsog' or 'no Tsog' if a Tsog offering is to be made or not.

Quick Path to Great Bliss

Both Quick Path to Great Bliss and Dakini Yoga are Highest Yoga Tantra practices of Buddha Vajrayogini, containing all the essential practices of Secret Mantra. These sessions are open only to those who have received the appropriate empowerment.

Vajrayogini is a female Highest Yoga Tantra Deity who is the embodiment of indivisible bliss and emptiness. She is the same nature as Heruka. The instruction of Vajrayogini is the most profound teaching of Highest Yoga Tantra. In many respects, it is ideally suited to the present day, for example because it reveals how we can transform our attachments into the spiritual path. Originally taught by Buddha Vajradhara within Heruka Tantra, it is the supreme method for purifying our environment, body and mind, and is one of the main practices of the Kadampa tradition.

Bodhisattva's Confession of Moral Downfalls

In our previous lives, while under the influence of deluded minds, we created a great deal of negative karma, and we also transgressed our commitments and incurred root and secondary downfalls. As a result, we now experience difficulties in developing faith and conviction in Dharma and in making progress on the stages of the path to enlightenment. In this practice we make prostrations to the enlightened beings to purify our negative karma and experience pure happiness. Prostrations need not be physical, but can also be done mentally.

This practice is also known as the Three Heaps, 35 Confession Buddhas, or 'prostrations'.

Medicine Buddha Prayer

Medicine Buddha is a Buddha doctor, and the source of all healing. In this practice, we make prayers for all those who are sick--our self or others.

1000-armed-Avalokiteshva

A special fasting and purification practice in conjunction with Eleven-faced Avalokiteshvara

This special fasting and purification practice is performed in conjunction with Eleven-faced Avalokiteshvara. It is very powerful for purifying negative karma of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. It is also a special method for receiving blessings and improving our experience of love, compassion, and bodhichitta.

Usually this practice is done over two days, with the eight Mahayana precepts being taken at the beginning of each day. On the first day, it is customary to abstain from all meals apart from lunch. On the second day, we engage in a complete fast, abstaining from all food and drink for twenty-four hours. On both days, we do three sessions of the puja – one first thing in the morning, one before lunch, and one late in the afternoon. If we wish, we can repeat the pattern of the two days many times. Those who are unable to engage in a complete fast can participate in the puja on the second day, provided they take the eight Mahayana precepts on that day and again only have lunch.

Both days we avoid the so-called "black foods" such as alcohol, meat, eggs, onion, garlic, or spices. Coffee and tea are ok, but no chai ;-)
